McDonald's to give away books with kid's meals

From the red carpet to the golden arches: an unlikely champion in the battle to get children reading has emerged in the shape of McDonald's, which is set to give away nine million books by Michael Morpurgo, author of the smash hit children's novel War Horse, with its Happy Meals.

The fast food chain has linked up with publisher HarperCollins to hand out millions of copies of former children's laureate Morpurgo's Mudpuddle Farm books, aimed at younger readers, along with its Happy Meals, in one of its biggest ever promotions.

  2. No present should be linked to food, FOOD is the present, and children should learn that. All religions in human history, from animist to islam, from budism to evangelicals would agree with this. And the reasonable atheist too, no doubt. Sorry but I would´t encorage to have any meal with any present, but I would give food definitely as a present

    1. I agree with you in that food should not be linked with a reward: Eat this and you will get a book; children should definitely be taught that eating is a privilege in itself. Yet here, what is at stake, in my view, is not so much eating as such, but choosing a restaurant to eat out: “You have chosen this restaurant, so here you have this book for your child”, it is a marketing strategy of course, just as any of the millions of strategies that surround us, but at least it promotes a good habit, so that’s why I personally welcome it.
