HOLIDAY READS

Summertime is approaching and this means more opportunities to lose oneself in a good book.
We all look forward to the long, warm days, the lure of the hammock or the beach towel, or even the train seat…
I’ve already started my summer reading list, which includes theatre plays, novels and short stories:
-          Fanfan by Alexandre Jardin
-          Leviathan by Paul Auster
-          Hamlet Machine by Heine Müller
-          Nights at the Circus by Angela Carter
-          The Complete Plays by Sarah Kane
-          The Little Black Book of Stories by A.S. Byatt
-          Todo lo que tengo lo llevo conmigo de Herta Müller

  1. I have read several books in Spanish, probably not that ones of "mainstream culture", and not brand new books at all, but..

Probably most interesting of all, against any expectation, was General Franco´s biography by English researcher Paul Preston.Very well written I think it´s a must to open minded people interested in Spanish history (a lot of pages, sorry! but it worths).

I have read also Tim Flannery´s book "Aqui en la tierra", a fairly good introduction to the relationships between men and environment since the begining of our species to our days.Last summer I read "Cuentos breves para leer en el bus"a gorgeous Argentinian selection of writers all over the world. As far I now there is a second volume. Stories from Mellville, Poe, Stevenson, Twain, Wilde, K . Mansfield, Francis Bret Harte, O . Henry can be read there..Thank you for the blog!

  2. Thanks a lot for your recommendations, Branda! I’ve read some of the stories compiled in Cuentos breves para leer en el bus” It’s a treasury book which rescues universal masterpieces.
As you like stories in Spanish let me recommend you two titles by one of my favourite writers (maybe you’ve read them already): Las Armas secretas y otros relatos e Historias de Cronopios y de cronopios y de famas by Julio Cortázar.
I’ve heard about Paul Preston but I’ve never read anything by him. It’s curious how some best Hispanists are British and American scholars.
    Thanks again!
